Osteoporosis Treatment : When Patients Choose It

W
ith a fracture every 30 seconds in the European Union, osteoporosis is a considerable problem. But it is far from inevitable.

As explained by Professor Philippe Orcel, Lariboisiere Hospital in Paris, "with the treatments currently available to us, we can reduce fractures. Both the first, in women who have osteoporosis risk factors that relapses. "

Bone is living tissue which renews itself constantly through the action of cells that produce bone - osteoblasts - to compensate for the work undermines operated by osteoclasts.

The biphosphonates, a family of non-hormonal drugs, acting on the same mechanism of the disease by slowing the work of osteoclasts. But this is not sufficient in itself. As pointed out by Philippe Orcel, "we encounter problems of compliance."

All bisphosphonates to be effective must indeed to be absorbed strictly on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before taking any food. "This means a minimum of organisation and accommodation for patients starting osteoporosis treatment," he says.

The arrival of a new drug that can be taken once a week instead of once a day, will disrupt the lives of osteoporosis patients.

A study conducted in 19 countries and over 400 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis showed that nearly 90% prefer the hotel weekly.

A proportion confirms Philippe Orcel, which ensures that it intends like many fellow rheumatologists, to leave his patients… choose their osteoporosis treatment!
