Osteoporosis: Canadians Have Crusts To Eat

o you know what osteoporosis ? The average Canadian neither.

According to an Ipsos-Reid, one in eight (13%) perceives osteoporosis as a disease which affects older women (false), third believes that having a diet rich in calcium puts us to protect (partially false) and almost half of Canadians believe that osteoporosis can be recognized easily with clear signs (false).

In reality, bone loss occurs behind the scenes, without the slightest warning rider, to the point where the disease is often diagnosed after a fracture ... which will be perhaps the first in a long series.

An estimated 1.4 million the number of Canadians who are affected. A man in eight suffers, and it is expected that this number increases with the aging of the population.

It is a disease characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density. The reasons are poorly understood, but it cites generally among the risk factors excessive consumption of alcohol, physical inactivity, a lack of calcium and low rates of male hormones.

The survey was funded by the pharmaceutical company Merck Frosst Canada, and produced in collaboration with Osteoporosis Quebec and the Osteoporosis Society of Canada.
