Osteoporosis : We must Still Inform

M
any women are unaware they are suffering from osteoporosis. The disease under-diagnosed, and hence under-treated, causing yet more than 130 000 fractures each year in France.

Jean Wactawski-Wende of the University of Buffalo in the USA, followed 836 women she osteodensitometrie subject to a systematic review that measures bone mineral density and ask whether the diagnosis of osteoporosis .

More than half of them actually suffered from the disease. But one year after the exam, one in four women had not informed his doctor treating the outcome of the review. And half had still not begun treatment to slow the progression of the disease.

In addition, many women at risk for osteoporosis do not make a osteodensitometrie. According to Jean Wactawski-Wende, "we must improve and intensify the education of women but also doctors."

Osteoporosis: "The Landscape Is Changing"

O
steoporosis is each year in France, more than 50 000 osteoporosis fractures hip. One in four women died within one year and 60% will never return to completely autonomous.

Today every woman aged over 50 has a three chance of making a osteoporosis fracture of this type, during the 35 years he left to live.

Present at the show of medicine, Médec, Dr. Elisabeth Confavreux of the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon says that the landscape is changing and that new hopes are emerging.

"There is a hope of detecting the osteoporosis risk of fracture. Everyone is concerned, nobody has to escape. It can indeed detect the osteoporosis risk of fracture, this is fundamental, as well as taking measures to prevent fractures which will jeopardize the quality of life of women with osteoporosis, "said she.

But now osteoporosis screening is still not supported. Elisabeth Confavreux was still some hope. "For the moment it is difficult in financial terms, not in terms of the examination which is extremely quick and painless.

The osteodensitometrie will soon be taken care of and therefore accessible to all. "This examination can determine and predict precisely the risk of osteoporosis fracture at more or less long term.

In this case, it is possible to treat women. For Elisabeth Confavreux treatment s'envisage on two points.

"Either it is a preventive measure, ie it prevents the loss of bone and helps keep her bone. This is fundamental. Either you have a low bone mineral density and in this case it is absolutely necessary to avoid fractures in the long term.

"And as recalled Dr. Confavreux," today we have weekly treatments easy to take, not too binding and effective. "

Osteoporosis : Especially Women

Osteoporosis : Especially Women

T
hroughout life, bone is constantly renewed and removed, this process is called bone turnover.

When women are postmenopauses, cell activity destructive bone is bigger than cell activity constructrices bone so that the bones gradually lose their mass and strength and are more likely to break or fracture. This condition is called osteoporosis.

About 200 million women worldwide suffer from osteoporosis (630,000 Belgium). The disease affects mostly women postmenopauses when they lose the protective effect of estrogen. A smaller number of men is also affected by osteoporosis.

One in three women will suffer at least one osteoporosis fracture during their lifetime. The impact of osteoporosis is high. The disease can cause serious disability, loss of independence or even death.

Osteoporosis is a disease that rapidly progresses from the moment a fracture occurred. Among women over 45 years, there are more days spent in hospital for osteoporosis than for other diseases, including diabetes, myocardial infarction and breast cancer.

Osteoporosis, Cortisone Unmasked

I
t is well known for years that "the high-dose cortisone, widely prescribed against asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases weakens the skeleton." Why? An early response comes from the USA.

In fact, it would appear that this hormone acts directly on cells responsible for bone: osteoblasts, which are builders bone, and osteoclasts that remove old bone.

A team of the Faculty of Medicine at Washington University (St. Louis, USA) worked on different lines of genetically engineered mice. It reached conclusions suprenantes.

According to this work indeed, cortisone cause of self osteoblasts, inhibiting the contrary, the destructive power of osteoclasts.

A good news, because they are destroying the bones? Not necessarily. Because of the coup, "the process of renewal of the skeleton is blocked. And the bones are weakened under the combined effects of ageing and stress" suggest the authors.

For the first time, this is a rational explanation to the main side effect of corticosteroids. It remains to penetrate the molecular mechanism. This is the only way to develop - maybe! -- Against an attack and enhance the safety of these treatments

Osteoporosis, An Unknown Disease

O
ne in two women past age 50 will be the victim of an osteoporotic fracture.

The most dramatic is of course one of the hip, with its burden of pain and disability. Among the women admitted to hospital for such a fracture, keep half a disability and 20% die within a year!

The mortality rate of hip fracture is comparable to that of stroke. Osteoporosis is causing a greater number of days of hospitalization as heart attack or stroke or cancer.

Osteoporosis causes spending as important as for example congestive heart failure.

It is therefore a very serious public health problem as has been widely shown in conjunction with the Congress of the EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism) in Lisbon.

And yet extremely effective medications exist. But as with any disease before treatment should be diagnosed. But diagnosis - if it is - the east in general when a woman breaks ...

There is an excellent way to diagnose osteoporosis before this divide: osteodensitometrie. A tool under-utilized in most countries and is not supported in many countries, including France.

It is unclear that health officials do not remedy such a situation, and do not, given its seriousness, as much consideration to osteoporosis they attach to other diseases.

Osteoporosis: How Not To Make Old Bones

O
steoporosis affects 40% of females and 13% of men over fifty years. This bone disease, frequent changing very quietly, without giving the slightest sign, until it manifests itself brutally by a fracture.

This "silent epidemic" worrying public health officials. Four specialists come to dedicate a practical guide.

Contrary to what one imagines often, the bone is living tissue, which renews itself continuously throughout life. And when the destruction took precedence over training, it weakens, it becomes porous.

This is what happens with advanced age, even faster than the bone of departure was low. Hence the need to "enrich" the maximum during childhood and adolescence, thanks to contributions sufficient calcium, vitamin D and protein.

In their book, the authors answer any questions concerning both ways - the need - early detection of osteoporosis than those of the deal. The screening by osteodensitometrie, is reimbursed for those at risk for nearly a year.

And now there are effective drugs against the disease. This little guide is also the beautiful part to prevention, so much the reduction of bone mass that falls, the source of most fractures.

Osteoporosis: Canadians Have Crusts To Eat

D
o you know what osteoporosis ? The average Canadian neither.

According to an Ipsos-Reid, one in eight (13%) perceives osteoporosis as a disease which affects older women (false), third believes that having a diet rich in calcium puts us to protect (partially false) and almost half of Canadians believe that osteoporosis can be recognized easily with clear signs (false).

In reality, bone loss occurs behind the scenes, without the slightest warning rider, to the point where the disease is often diagnosed after a fracture ... which will be perhaps the first in a long series.

An estimated 1.4 million the number of Canadians who are affected. A man in eight suffers, and it is expected that this number increases with the aging of the population.

It is a disease characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density. The reasons are poorly understood, but it cites generally among the risk factors excessive consumption of alcohol, physical inactivity, a lack of calcium and low rates of male hormones.

The survey was funded by the pharmaceutical company Merck Frosst Canada, and produced in collaboration with Osteoporosis Quebec and the Osteoporosis Society of Canada.

Osteoporosis: Women Take Charge

T
wo years ago, a group of women narbonnaises have created the French Association for the Fight against osteoporosis (AFLO). A disease that affects mainly women and whose governments give the impression of neglect.

Staves by this impression while insisting that their approach is not the "suffragettes", members of the AFLO have set two goals :
  • arouse the attention of women, exposing them to the danger of this disease "silent" as osteoporosis and answers that specialists can offer them
  • intervene with the government to become aware of the importance of the problem, and urgent decisions

More precisely, they want to be taken into account the prevention of osteoporosis and its screening by the osteodensitometrie. It is today the only consideration that would diagnose the disease.

The association is assumed that this support would be less costly for social security, that fractures and care they require. She quickly found its first members, which surprise anyone.
